    About the Summit

    Healing Together With Lunas Philipinas

The Hearth Summit Philippines will engage 150 changemakers in an immersive three-day journey to build a world that nurtures the wellbeing of our communities and the planet. Wellbeing is at the heart of social change, and yet for many activists and organizations, self-care remains an elusive task that leads to exhaustion and burnout.

Join us as we define new levels of awareness about individual and collective wellbeing through the lens of traditional Philippine values. Changemakers will have the opportunity to learn from peers, colleagues and expert speakers on how to cultivate their direct relationship with the natural environment and explore intergenerational healing through the arts, music, workshops and rituals.  Special attention will be given to creating safe indoor andoutdoor spaces for rest, connection, and critical reflection throughout the Summit.

Nestled in the lush Central Visayas region of Siquijor, the Summit will leverage the island’s unique cultural heritage and natural landscapes. Once known as the mystical “Island of Fire”, Siquijor shares a rich history of traditional healing practices and environmental conservation. This is the ideal place to explore the indigenous ways of knowing and its overall impact on wellbeing.

Let us learn, discover, and connect around the Hearth together. We look forward to hosting you on this collective journey to wellbeing and social change in the Philippines!

    THE PROGRAMME

    THREE DAYS, FIVE ELEMENTS

Learn, discover, and connect around the Hearth

Inspired by the other regional Hearth Summits which have sparked regional movements for wellbeing around the world, Hearth Summit Philippines will be the seed for individual and collective action in ensuring the wellbeing of those on the frontlines of social change in the Philippines.

The Hearth Summit Philippines (Lunas Pilipinas) programme will centre on the five key natural elements: fire, air, water, earth, and ether. Throughout the three-day gathering, we will focus on each element and its relationship to traditional Philippine values, intergenerational healing, and ecological belonging. In addition, we will hold a series of pre-Summit events to engage the broader diaspora to offer accessible content and ongoing engagement across geographies.

    Adora Faye de Vera

Adora Faye is an artist, poet, and revolutionary. She was first arrested at the age of 22 for fighting against the Marcos Dictatorship and Martial Law where she was subject to numerous, gross human rights violations. Under the second Marcos presidency, Adora was again arrested and detained in the provincial jail of Iloilo in August of 2022 under false, multiple charges of murder. She was held for over a year before a court found no evidence or basis for her arrest or detainment and she was freed. During her wrongful incarceration, Adora wrote about the state of women in the jail, which highlighted the prison industrial complex making super profits from the traditional hablon weaving inmates are forced to do in order to be given basic needs such as water. Adora used her embroidery skills to record the stories of the individual women and global women’s rights everywhere.

    Liza Largoza Maza

Liza Maza is a veteran legislator, activist, and champion of women’s rights and the poor. Liza is trailblazer in the global women’s movement, having led Gabriela Philippines, the largest alliance of militant Philippine women’s organizations for over 20 years. She went onto become the first representative of Gabriela Women’s Party, serving as a Congressperson from 2001 to 2010. During her time in congress, she co-authored the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003, the Anti-Violence in Women and Children’s Act, the Magna Carta of Women, and the Juvenile Justice Act. In 2010, Liza founded the Working for Empowerment and Good Governance Institute (WeGovern), which conducts education, training, research, and advocacy activities “to advance new politics with gender and democratic governance at it’s core.”

    STORIES FROM THE SUMMIT

    Why Lunas Philipinas?

Lunas is the Tagalog word for “remedy” or “cure.” More than that, it is an antidote, medicine for what ails you in the broadest sense, answers to help you get through a hard time. Lunas is an exhale after a long day, comfort for weary souls, balm for broken hearts, a practice of hope, and invitation to come together as kapwa, in community.

The Summit, hosted on the remote island of Siquijor, is co-created by the Siquijor Healers Association and will invite changemakers to explore the unique traditions and culture of the island’s healer community. Once known as the mystical “Island of Fire”, Siquijor shares a rich history of traditional healing practices and environmental conservation. This will be an ideal place to explore Indigenous ways of knowing and its overall impact on wellbeing. To learn more about the Siquijor healers, the upcoming Summit, and a Philippine take on wellbeing, read Summit co-creator Macy Castañeda Lee’s feature in Tatler Asia.

A SPECIAL CALLING FOR THE FILIPINO DIASPORA

Hearth Summit Philippines will be dedicated to fostering wellbeing for the global Filipino community.

“With a legacy of 400 years of Spanish colonization and then being sold to the United States for 100 years, by the time the Philippines gained their full “freedom” in 1946, colonial mentality, identity, and relationships were deeply ingrained in our culture. Add to this enduring exploitation of the land and the people, corruption, and a 20+ year Marcos dictatorship, the result is a country whose biggest export are its people in the form of migrant laborers.

Overseas Filipino Workers are responsible for supporting a significant part of the GDP, sending over USD60 billion annually in remittances. While they are called “heroes”by the government, the cost is too great — there are generations of children being raised without their mothers or fathers. It will take an average of 12 years or more to reunite their families.

On the other side of oceans, American / European / Middle-Eastern-born Filipinos face issues of identify, racism, and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

What is incredible and enduring is the spirit of Filipinos all over the world to persist. They adapt. They survive. They bring the Philippines with them wherever they go-through food, values, language, and family ties. And, in almost 200 countries, Filipinos continue to think of the Philippines as “home.” The Balikbayan is not just a title, it’s a journey home.

The need for wellbeing is the journey to healing intergenerational trauma, finding our place through ecological belonging and defining our understanding of our culture through sikolohiyang Pilipino.”

Rooting Ecological Belonging in Higher Education

Educators, administrators, researchers, and other higher education professionals: the Hearth Summit is where a new culture of education emerges!

In July 2024, members of our Wellbeing in Higher Education Network (WHEN) gathered in Querétaro, México, for a four-day experience diving deep into the concept of Ecological Belonging. Changemakers in education fostered a sense of connection with themselves, their community, and nature in this intimate environment dedicated to transforming higher education and reconnecting it with the Earth. In this space, peers gathered to share ideas, learn from each other, and grow throughout transformative discussions, hands-on workshops, and immersive cultural excursions. The arts and wellbeing practices provided moments for inner work and personal reflection — weaving together individual, collective, and planetary wellbeing.

WHERE WELLBEING IN EDUCATION BLOSSOMS WHERE WELLBEING IN EDUCATION BLOSSOMS

    KEY PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

The four-day gatherings took educators on a holistic journey of Ecological Belonging, exploring the topic through conceptual, methodological, and experiential means:

Understanding Ecological Belonging and its many dimensions in higher education

Local roots: Ecological Belonging through the lens of Mexican rituals and cultures

Intergenerational wisdom and lessons from Elders

    Mindful, conscious tourism and experiences

Insights from the Ecological Belonging Fellowship

The arts as an space to explore, learn, and ideate

Case studies from WHEN members: effective methodologies for bringing Ecological Belonging to life

    Embracing and Celebrating Mexican Heritage

    WITH THE Otomí COMMUNITY

Throughout the Summit, members of the Indigenous Otomí community invited changemakers to discover the vibrant cultural heritage of Querétaro and the surrounding area. During a day excursion to Amealco de Bonfil, participants were greeted with an emblematic ritual from the region, the “Danza de las Pastoras”, a dance to greet, ask, thank and share offerings. A workshop with medicinal plants illustrated the Otomí people’s traditional use of plants, honoring the memory of their first methods of healing to cure the enxe (soul). Changemakers also took time to create lele dolls, an iconic symbol of Mexico’s Indigenous heritage. Meaning baby in Otomí, the lele holds a special meaning for the Indigenous community, representing the blending of different traditions and the resilience of the Otomí people.

ABOUT THE SUMMIT ABOUT THE SUMMIT

A Journey of (Re)Discovering Self, Community, and Sustainability

In the serene environment of Sorocaba, Brazil, 200 changemakers gathered for an exciting day full of discovery, connection, and inspiration! Hearth Summit São Paulo built upon the incredible momentum that the first regional summit in Brazil created in 2023 to take actions and conversations around wellbeing and social change to the next level. Led by the innovative team at FACENS University, changemakers embarked on a journey inwards, inspiring self-knowledge and care, and outwards, inviting deeper connections with others and the Earth.

Hearth Summit São Paulo was an emotional and intellectual journey, full of inspiring discussions and experiences. Here, changemakers found an opportunity to (re)encounter themselves and enjoy a moment to experience a new consciousness that can echo beyond the Summit. Changemakers discovered knowledge, information, tools, experiences and awareness about the breadth of the topic of wellbeing and everything it encompasses.

The topics covered and the experiences proposed seek to open minds and hearts so that everyone can live in a more inclusive, sustainable, balanced and loving world. Missed the Summit? Discover session recordings and stories below.

    About the Summit

    An Intergenerational Conversation on Wellbeing

Following an incredible, first-of-its-kind Pan-African gathering in 2023, Tostan kept the fire burning with a second regional summit in Thiès, Senegal! With a focus on “Eldership and Youth, An Intergenerational Conversation on Wellbeing”, Hearth Summit Thiès 2024 was co-created with young leaders and social change agents from across Africa. Together, 165 changemakers from across Africa reflected on the power of intergenerational dialogue on wellbeing through a range of topics, including youth mental health, ecological belonging, peacebuilding and reconciliation, and paradigm shifts in funding for wellbeing initiatives.

Through practical sessions and “The Wellbeing Artisan’s Hearth”, attendees also learned and share effective tools, solutions and methodologies to enhance their own wellbeing.

With the event’s Ritual Alchemist, Antoine Boubane, changemakers also jumped into a cultural immersion with the Bassari community, renowned for their rich heritage and ecological wisdom. They discovered the Bassari’s traditional practices deeply connected to nature, their role as “guardians of the earth,” and their efforts to preserve their cultural and natural heritage in the face of modern challenges. Together, changemakers explored our deep connection to both our cultural and physical wellbeing through storytelling, artistic performances, exhibits, and art therapy.

As young Africans, we are facing numerous social, economic, and technological pressures that impact our wellbeing and challenge our aspirations. Addressing these challenges in our communities, where relationships between elders and youth are essential, requires an intergenerational approach. The wisdom of our elders offers guidance and stability, while the fresh perspectives of youth inspire innovative solutions.

This is what Hearth Summit Thiès is all about: weaving a dialogue between our past and our present, harnessing the wisdom of our origins to build resilience today and fulfill our aspirations for the future.

    STORIES FROM THE SUMMIT

    UNE RENCONTRE ÉCOLOGIQUE

    WITH THE BASSARI COMMUNITY

Led by Ritual Alchemist Antoine Boubane (Black Keme), the Summit invited changemakers to explore the world of the Bassari, an Indigenous group from southeast Senegal. Antoine and an elder, Balingho, guided participants on a journey exploring the Bassari’s coming-of-age traditions. With meaningful dances, an atelier workshop filled with Bassari crafts and sacred objects, and energizing performances, Antoine shared his heritage with the pan-African changemaking community. Watch this introduction video to meet the Bassari.

    ABOUT THE SUMMIT

    Embracing the Art of Change

Changemakers in Austria: it’s time to create a new art of change! Tackling burnout culture, organizational dysfunction, and societal divisions, join us for three days in the beautiful landscape of the Austrian Alps where Hearth Summit Austria will foster the key to social transformation — a regenerative and cooperative culture for changemakers.

For 200 changemakers, Hearth Summit Austria, hosted by Pioneers of Change, invites you to revive instead of burning out: join us to develop wellbeing at the individual, organizational, and collective levels. How can you care for your personal wellbeing? How can your teams and organizations operate more effectively? How can society mend social divisions and reconnect with nature? Together we explore these questions and more — all in pursuit of not sustainability, but a truly regenerative approach to social change.

Join pioneers from diverse backgrounds — social entrepreneurs, activists, philanthropists, leaders and innovative people from politics, media, education, health, science and art — for this unforgettable experience in Alpbach.

Hearth Summit Austria is an invite-only event and will be hosted in German. You can learn more and apply to attend here (website in German):

Connecting Me to We to Us

Learn, discover, and connect around the Hearth

    INDIVIDUAL WELLBEING

    From self-exploitation to self-care
In a world of “higher, faster, further”, we are driven into high levels of tension, stress and overexertion. Burnout is too common — it’s time for a revival. How can we get out of patterns of self-exploitation and adopt habits to be well-nourished, powerful, and effective? What practices can try to help us do this?

    ORGANIZATIONAL WELLBEING

    From competition to cooperation
Organizations are coming under increasing pressure in a time of complexity and uncertainty. Old power patterns lead to friction and conflict, preventing us from reaching our full potential. How do we as organizations manage to establish an agile and cooperative culture? How do we transform tensions into constructive energy?

    SYSTEMIC WELLBEING: A NEW PARADIGM

    From separation to interbeing
In the face of growing crises, we cannot continue as we have been. But quick solutions do not address the root of our problems: our worldview of separation. We feel alienated from nature, other people, and even from ourselves. How can we achieve a profound transformation of our worldview? How can we develop a narrative of interconnectedness? And how can we live this narrative in concrete terms?

The Art of Change — Through the Arts The Art of Change — Through the Arts

Art has the transformative potential to connect us from the present moment with our origins, our humanity, and our role in the world. The arts will be an essential part of the programme — stay tuned for more information!

    Sustainability and Ecological Belonging

Join us for three days immersed in the pristine ecological haven of Alpbach, where the Alpbach Congress Centrum, surrounded by meadows, mountains and nature, is an ideal place to reflect and regenerate.

Its history roots Hearth Summit Austria in a special narrative of social change: since 1945, when Otto Molden and Simon Moser founded the “College” (later the European Forum Alpbach), Alpbach has been known as the “village of thinkers”.

Hearth Summit Austria will also embody its theme of regenerative culture and ecological belonging by upholding event production elements according to the Austrian eco-label.

EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST IN ATTENDING HEARTH SUMMIT AUSTRIA

Hearth Summit Austria is an invite-only event and will be hosted in German. You can express your interest in attending with this form (in English). We’ll share your information with the organizers, who will then contact you with more information.

“I did this as a small reminder to people that it´s necessary to take care of our health when leaving home and having contact with others, giving special importance to hygiene, but in addition we must eat well and keep good habits to strengthen our body, our internal defenses. This is not easy for everyone, many don´t have access to proper food, either for financial reasons or availability, but despite the difficulties we must try our best to take care of ourselves and stay healthy.”

In the current Covid-19 crisis thinking on the future just makes me experience much anxiety. As I currently see things, there’s no point to think about the future when a storm of uncertainty surrounds us and our lives are on hold. I think it’s time for us to stay mindful, concentrating on the present moment and tackle everyday problems in the calmest way possible. If our mind is overloaded, our capacity response will stay low which won’t allow us to progress. I suggest practicing yoga and meditation as a powerful tool to stay calm and coherent.

In response to COVID-19, The Wellbeing Project, in collaboration with Amplifier Art launched a campaign with top art curators and public-health advisors from around the world, looking for symbols that promote mental health, wellbeing and social change work in this new age.

Capitalism tries to push the idea that we need to be productive. A lot of us feel like we need to constantly hustle and be on the grind to achieve our dreams. But giving yourself time to rest and take care of yourself is a gift that can empower you. It sounds counter-intuitive, but rest ultimately allows you to be in a stronger place to tackle whatever comes your way. But we are in a global pandemic right now. It’s necessary to rest and breathe and check in with yourself!

“My poster is one of a series of three original oil paintings. I used oil due to its association with portraits of important historical figures, adding gravity to the message in the poster. The idea is to insert the mask into attractive and aspirational images, representing the idea of wearing a mask as a positive thing. Each poster is based around the word breathe. Firstly – around the literal idea of being able to breathe freely by wearing a mask, secondly – allowing the planet the space to breathe by doing your part and thirdly – addressing the anxiety that comes with the unknown elements of the crisis.”

In response to COVID-19, The Wellbeing Project, in collaboration with Amplifier Art launched a campaign with top art curators and public-health advisors from around the world, looking for symbols that promote mental health, wellbeing and social change work in this new age.

“I created this artwork because I wanted to celebrate all of the acts of selflessness and kindness, both big and small, that we have seen during the pandemic. But I was also seeing so much hatred and blame. I wanted to remind people to withhold judgement, to remember that we are all in this together and that a little kindness goes a long way. Even wearing a mask and maintaining distance is an act of kindness and respect to those around us. I chose the rainbow and sunshine as a bright and positive backdrop to the message – the symbol of hope, of rays of sunlight which shine through in a dark storm. I hope this message can help people to stay positive, and that it encourages everyone to spread a little love in these difficult times.”

We feel the urge to stay up to date on the current happenings and tend to incline towards negativity. This artwork is inspired by vintage advertisements, portraying the importance of a mental cleanse. Visual media like advertisements, cinema etc, have always been part of our mental growth. I visualise the voice of media to be more positive and break stereotypes around mental illness.”

    DON’T PANIC, BE RESILIENT

In response to COVID-19, The Wellbeing Project, in collaboration with Amplifier Art launched a campaign with top art curators and public-health advisors from around the world, looking for symbols that promote mental health, wellbeing and social change work in this new age.

“This work riffs off the famous phrase of the Indian spiritual master Meher Baba, “Don’t worry; Be happy,” later converted into song by Bobby McFerrin in 1988. Its concise message of positivity has at times been misunderstood as careless or passive, but simplicity is powerful and mantras like these continue to be used because they encourage us during challenging times. While its difficult to be happy in the face of this crisis and the uncertainty it brings, together we can withstand the curve, flatten it, and recover- not through worry or panic, but through collaboration as a world community. With this work, I want to express a simple message for all of us: to resist fear-mongering messages and to focus on our innate human resilience.”

“The nearer a man comes to a calm mind, the closer he is to strength’ In my opinion, mental health is the most overlooked aspect of human nature. Seldom we give it the attention it deserves. No amount of wealth guarantees ones well being and current global scenario is a reflection of the same. At the moment, when the world is facing a, what seems to be an immortal, enemy, no amount of wealth or militia is enough to fight it. In these times, when people are forced to be at home, take a step back and reflect. As much effort is being put in maintaining and enhancing physical strength, try and focus on your inner peace as well. What makes you happy? A question, to which most of us have an answer to, but rarely do we act on it. We have always been too pre occupied with things and troubles, which now do not seem to matter as much. So let’s take a deep breathe, and focus on what is more important – YOU. Be the change you wish to see in the world. World peace, begins at Inner peace. Stay Positive. Stay Home. Stay Safe”

    NOTABLE RESEARCH FINDINGS

Only 2 studies out of 102 studies on teacher wellbeing conducted in the last 5 years were in low-income countries; this report offers findings from 2 additional low-income countries. People who study teacher wellbeing recommend improvements to the school atmosphere, but no studies of school-level or policy interventions were found.

    Engagement:

When on the cusp of burnout, some teachers said that getting more deeply engaged in their work, for example by leading the school-wide IT team or serving on a district-wide committee, prevented burnout.

    Successful students:

Teachers experienced wellbeing when they saw their students win awards or achieve their goals, and liked this as much or more than receiving awards themselves.

    Relationships affect each other:

Teachers, principals, students, parents, and policymakers’ behaviors and attitudes intertwine. Improving one may help them all. Teacher wellbeing across these actors was related to respect, praise, motivation, and hard work.
