THE WELLBEING SUMMIT ARRIVES TO BILBAO THE WELLBEING SUMMIT ARRIVES TO BILBAO

More than 85 artists across 10 venues, including the Guggenheim Bilbao, will bring exhibits, newly commissioned works and a vibrant performing arts program open to Bilbao residents

BILBAO – BISCAY, SPAIN (May 26, 2022) The Wellbeing Project presents its inaugural Wellbeing Summit for Social Change from 1 to 3 June 2022: a global event bringing together social change, governmental, arts and business leaders working at the intersection of individual and collective wellbeing. The three-day summit will consist of ground-breaking talks, conversations and panel discussions highlighting the connections between individual, organisational and societal wellbeing. BBVA supports the inaugural wellbeing summit for social change in Bilbao-Biscay.

BBVA joins the event as a leading supporter allowing the summit to bring social change leaders and artists from more than 60 countries and five continents to the region and experience the local culture. Because of this partnership, attendees as well as the citizens of Bilbao-Biscay and surrounding communities will have access to an extensive array of exhibits, newly commissioned works of art and vibrant performing arts. The full list of over 85 artists that will have their work on display can be found here

BBVA is creating its own exhibit entitled “Art and Spirituality. Imagining the Extraordinary,” curated by Alfonso de la Torre. The show brings together a carefully selected group of works from the historical and contemporary holdings in the BBVA Collection in Spain. Arranged in four different chapters, around forty classic and modern artworks are seamlessly displayed alongside one another, acknowledging the wealth and diversity of the BBVA Collection in a variety of media and techniques: painting, sculpture, photography and installation as well as videos on loan courtesy of other collections. .The show wishes to highlight the influence that spirituality, understood as a universal phenomenon, has exerted on art creation throughout time and in addition the impact of both Art and Spirituality in human wellbeing. It will be open to the public from 31 March to 5 June 2022.

Moreover, BBVA will be offering several activities around the show in the Palacio de San Nicolás: a unique musical ecosystem performed by the string quartet Brooklyn Rider; Birdheart a chamber piece of animated theatre which speaks about man’s relationship to the world; an encounter with Bach by cellist Maciej Kulakowsk  followed by a mindfulness creative lab with Corinna da Fonseca; projection of Mar Soli’s performance as well as guided tours in English to the exhibition “Art and Spirituality. Imagining the extraordinary.

In addition to their own collection, BBVA’s support will allow the Bilbao community to celebrate local artists as well. Acclaimed artist who lives and works in Bilbao – Biscay, June Crespo will have her “CORE22” work open to the public from 20 of May to 15 2022 of June at Museo de Bellas Artes. Crespo will also produce three, new, related works to be placed in a public space. Another artist, Alicia Framis, originally from Barcelona, Spain, will have her work “Taking flight” open to the public at Bizkaia Aretoa – Axular from 31 May to 3 June 2022.

“We are thankful to have thoughtful partners like BBVA to help expand the footprint of wellbeing during our summit,” said Sandrine Woitrin and Aaron Pereira, Project Co-Leads of The Wellbeing Project. “Their exhibit, along with the dozens of other pieces, will allow participants and residents alike to experience the outcome of centering wellbeing in all aspects of society for improved outcomes.”

“For BBVA, promoting culture and art in Bilbao is part of our commitment to this city. Both elements are essential to address the challenges of the future and position Bilbao as a capital of reference,” said Carlos Gorría, director of BBVA’s Northern Territory in Spain.

The Wellbeing Summit chose the location of Bilbao, Biscay because it is an international hub for art and culture. It is a place in the process of deepening its transformation by focusing on a Charter of Values that centres on improving the wellbeing of its citizens and the Sustainable Development Goals. BBVA and summit organisers hope to give participants and residents of Bilbao the opportunity to take an interactive journey exploring what social change can look like when municipal leaders are guided by wellbeing principles.

“Bilbao is pleased to host this first edition of the Wellbeing Summit for Social Change, which, I am sure, will help to set the road map for this new revolution in the making,” said Juan Mari Aburto, Mayor of Bilbao. “Over the years, Bilbao has been committed to a model of urban and human development that guarantees the possibility of realizing full and dignified life projects for all the people who live and work in this city. Our commitment to human wellbeing has become an international model that will help us to build hope for the future.”

The participants of this event will attend largely by invitation to ensure a diverse, representative, and pluralistic community of attendees. This will be the first of two global summits The Wellbeing Project will convene with the second to be announced for 2024.

Following the in-person summit, there will be virtual elements available to the public hosted by Parker J. Palmer, Author, Educator and Activist; Founder and Senior Partner Emeritus of the Center for Courage and Renewal (USA) and Sharon Salzberg, NY Times Bestselling Author and Meditation Teacher (USA)

Art and Spirituality. Imagining the Extraordinary is an exhibition organized by BBVA and curated by Alfonso de la Torre. It brings together a carefully selected group of works from the historical and contemporary holdings in the BBVA Collection in Spain.

Location: Palacio de San Nicolás, Plaza de San Nicolás 4
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
Date: March 31 – June 5

Time: 11am – 7pm

Arranged in four different chapters, around forty classic and modern artworks are seamlessly displayed alongside one another, acknowledging the wealth and diversity of the BBVA Collection in a variety of media and techniques: painting, sculpture, photography and installation as well as videos on loan courtesy of other collections.

The show wishes to highlight the influence that spirituality, understood as a universal phenomenon, has exerted on art creation throughout time.

Leveraging a variety of different resources—like religion, light, energy, emptiness, sublimity, metaphors or symbols—artists from different times have pondered on the purpose of creation and have tried to materialize in their works that essential aspect of the human being, that inner and transcendental element that gives meaning to our lives. Through the encounter with the artwork and appealing to concepts that are hard to express through words, they attempt to conjure a supernatural experience, inviting the beholder to “imagine the extraordinary.”

In the courtyard of the palace, the visitors will also be able to enjoy the recording of the performance Ripple. Expansive Wave by the artist Mar Solis, performed on the occasion of the exhibition opening.

WALKTHROUGH

The Origin – The Centre

The starting point for this journey is the beginning, the origin, symbolized by the presence of centres in art images. With its mysterious concealed, thinking and energetic centre, Oteiza’s metaphysical box exemplifies the birth of the image of the invisible. This chapter includes works whose exploration of the origin is rendered through a variety of representations, like spirals, maelstroms, circles or shafts of light. Gardens and Deserts. The Garden of Earthly Delights versus the Desert and Spaces.

The second chapter includes works related to images of heaven and its symbolic equivalents (paradise, Eden or the garden) and also illustrations of the opposite, death and desolation (deserts and graveyards). The former are represented with works by David Teniers, Ouka Leele and Esteban Vicente, and the latter with pieces by Yves Tanguy or Lucio Muñoz.

Between Pain and Ecstasy. Miracles and Healing

The third chapter is “Between Pain and Ecstasy,” with a special section devoted to “Miracle and Healing”. Extraordinary manifestations of the supernatural like miracles, ecstasy and apparitions are reflected in works by Bill Viola or Luis Vélez. Next to them are pieces that comment on a more everyday and closer connection with divinity, like the small private altarpiece attributed to Juan de Soreda or the sculpture by Mar Solís that seeks to challenge the very boundaries of matter.

The fourth and final chapter revolves around the notion of the fleetingness of life, most poignantly captured in the vanitas, illustrated here in several exceptional works like an anonymous painting of Saint Jerome, or vanitas by Joaquín Sorolla and Marina Abramović, arranged in dialogue with works by Miquel Barceló and Manuel Franquelo, and offset by the ghostly landscapes by Karl Eugen Körner and Juan Carlos Savater.

In the words of the curator, the exhibition “threads together images posed as apparitions, as transpicuous, passionate presences which, although anchored in the history of art, seem to have risen anew in this new moment of time, as if they were giving us a chance to be eye-witnesses to the unfolding of an event.”

The four chapters offer a contemporary and educational reading of “Art and Spirituality” grounded in the holdings of the BBVA Collection, inviting us to visit it and embark on a journey through a selection of extraordinary images.

Music and Spirituality. Listening to the Extraordinary

The mysticism of experience is further explored in Music and Spirituality. ESPAÑOL

Arte y espiritualidad.

INAUGURAL WELLBEING SUMMIT FOR SOCIAL CHANGE HIGHLIGHTS THE INTEGRAL ROLE OF ART IN DEVELOPING A NEW LANGUAGE FOR WELLBEING AND SOCIAL CHANGE

BILBAO – BISCAY, SPAIN (May 11, 2022) The Wellbeing Project presents its inaugural Wellbeing Summit for Social Change from 1st to 3rd June 2022: a global event bringing together social change, governmental, arts and business leaders working at the intersection of individual and collective wellbeing.

The three-day summit will consist of ground-breaking talks, conversations and panel discussions highlighting the connections between individual, organisational and societal wellbeing. Speakers will discuss the notion of how a deeply embedded culture of wellbeing can alter and inform our approach to driving positive systemic change.

The Wellbeing Summit chose the location of Bilbao, Biscay because it is an international hub for art and culture. It is a place in the process of deepening its transformation by focusing on a Charter of Values that centres on improving the wellbeing of its citizens and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The arts play an integral role in the development of a new language for inner wellbeing and can provide a greater understanding and expression of the human experience. During the summit, visitors will encounter different artistic experiences through a selection of exhibits, artworks and a vibrant performing arts program. Involving more than 85 artists at 10 venues, the event offers participants and residents of Bilbao the opportunity to take an interactive journey exploring what social change becomes with inner wellbeing at its heart.

“The arts have a unique power to express ideas and emotions in new ways, to create experiences that have a profound impact on our lives, and to help us make sense of the world around us. The Arts Program at the Summit invites us all to embark on a creative journey together; a journey that I hope will activate our whole selves and continue to resonate in our hearts and minds long after the event ends.”Manuel Bagorro, Arts Curator, The Wellbeing Summit for Social Change

Inspiring and creative Immersive Talks and Workshops will pair artists and speakers to examine wide-ranging topics that include neuroscience; intergenerational trauma; spirituality and rituals; diversity, equity, and inclusion; economics; business; climate; and technology.

The summit’s Artist Track program has commissioned 12 international artists to create a major new work exploring the idea of inner wellbeing, either for themselves, the community, or the world. Through the Artist Track, the Wellbeing Summit offers creative residencies in Bilbao-Biscay to support the creation of risk-taking new work that challenges assumptions and builds community. Vicente Todoli, Artistic Director of Pirelli HangarBicocca, has acted as advisor on the selection of artists.

Highlights include, Indian artist, Nikhil Chopra who will stage a 24-hour durational solo performance, placing his body at the centre of the artwork; while as part of her installation Himali Singh Soin collaborates with drummer, composer, and performance artist David Soin Tappeser to offer daily rituals that include a gong bath, readings and communal tea.

Artist and architect, Yazmany Arboleda creates a site-specific installation, Hospital for the Soul in the centre of Casilda Iturrizar Park. For 11 days, visitors will be able to see the reflection of Magnolia Tree #5, the Biscay Sky, themselves, and anyone else present in a specially created room. The temporary mirrored interior, created in response to the generational trauma caused by the Spanish Civil War, invites participants to reflect on our place on earth.

Bilbao-based artist, June Crespo has produced 3 new works related to her concrete sculpture series Core. Sculpted with materials such as fabric, concrete, fiberglass, plaster, and wax, her works are designed to be used by the public as a playground, a place to rest and contemplate, or a place to ‘dance’ with the pieces that act as a reminder of the interplay in our lives between what is absolute and grounded with the ephemeral and elusive.

Across the three-day summit, performances and community workshops will be offered by groups including the Harlem-based Bishop Chantel Wright and Songs of Solomon Gospel Choir and Silkroad Ensemble.

Artist Daan Roosegarde will debut SPARK Bilbao, a poetic performance of thousands of biodegradable light sparks which will organically float through the air, offering an innovative solution for sustainable community celebrations.

Other highlights include the Rubin Museum of Art’s Mandala Lab an interactive space that uses artists’ creativity and Buddhist principles to help visitors imagine how to transform disruptive emotions such as anger, jealousy, and pride.  Located in Parque de Doña Casilda de Iturrizar, the Mandala Lab features a pulsating light sculpture to encourage synchronized breathing, scent stimuli and videos to help unpack memories, and eight musician-curated gongs that the visitor can strike and dip into water.

Sonja Schenkel’s work for The Wellbeing Summit for Social Change is called “The Chrysalis Force Field.” The Chrysalis meditation pods invite guests to build a contemplative force field near the conference center. Five people at once can meditate in a circle; separate but together. The intention is to increase support and positive mindsets that are being shared at The Wellbeing Summit and beyond.

Location: Euskalduna
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Visits available upon pre-registration only.
Date: May 31 – June 3

“The force field is a reference to the constellation work, so vital for the wellbeing project. May it be of benefit for everyone and everything.” – Sonja Schenkel

The force field consists of 5 meditation pods that are hung from a structure within a tent. Each pod weighs about 5kg and sits on a round carpet. Materials used are reopened after the Summit. The carpets may be given as a present to people chosen by the Wellbeing Project. All components are handmade, fully sustainable, using natural dyes. Illumination at night is done with small solar lights.

Hidden in a separate, round tent vis-a-vis the conference center, the Chrysalis force field offer a place of silence amidst the rumble of talks and networking.
