    Hearth Summit Nairobi 2025

    ABOUT THE SUMMIT

    Fostering Intergenerational Wellbeing in Kenya

After an incredible first edition, Hearth Summit Nairobi returns to continue sparking wellbeing and positive change in Kenya! Get ready for another transformative experience where an exploration of wellbeing at every level — individual, organizational, societal, and ecological — will intersect, all in pursuit of creating a culture of wellbeing within Kenya and Africa’s social change sector.

    Stay tuned for more information.

In the meantime, express your interest in attending this year’s summit and catch a glimpse of Hearth Summit Nairobi 2024.

    From the OrganizersFrom the Organizers

Axum, organizing team of Hearth Summit Nairobi

In 2024, Hearth Summit Nairobi sparked powerful conversations about wellbeing in Kenya, bringing together a diverse community of

changemakers to confront stigma, dismantle systemic barriers, and explore holistic approaches to personal, collective, and ecological wellbeing. The summit affirmed that wellbeing is not an individual endeavor alone but profoundly shaped by the social, economic, and political systems that structure our everyday lives.

Against a backdrop of economic uncertainty, governance challenges, and persistent issues such as healthcare inequity, environmental degradation, and gender-based violence, the call for bold, locally rooted solutions has never been more urgent. As we look ahead to Hearth Summit Nairobi 2025, we are building on the energy and insights of last year’s gathering to delve deeper into the intersections of wellbeing, social equity, systemic transformation, and community resilience. By amplifying voices across sectors — business, social impact, the arts, grassroots organizing, and beyond — we aim to spark radical honesty, critical inquiry, and collective action toward reimagining systems where individuals, communities, and the nation can thrive.

The Hearth Summit Saltillo 2025 will be a transformative meeting space, designed to inspire, connect, and recognize the invaluable work of change agents, social project leaders, teachers, and students. Our general objective is to foster integral wellbeing through four key thematic pillars: ‘Hearth’ (emotional wellbeing), ‘Earth’ (ecological belonging), ‘Hear’ (professional development and continuous learning), and ‘Art’ (art for wellbeing).

We are hosting the Hearth Summit Saltillo to celebrate and to nurture the fundamental contribution of extraordinary changemakers that are sustaining our community. In these difficult times when the work of civil society and democratic institutions is being questioned, it is of great importance that we support the wellbeing, connection and sense of belonging between the leaders that are courageously and generously investing their lives on behalf of our people.

      About the Summit

      Healing Together With Lunas Philipinas

The Hearth Summit Philippines will engage 150 changemakers in an immersive three-day journey to build a world that nurtures the wellbeing of our communities and the planet. Wellbeing is at the heart of social change, and yet for many activists and organizations, self-care remains an elusive task that leads to exhaustion and burnout.

Join us as we define new levels of awareness about individual and collective wellbeing through the lens of traditional Philippine values. Changemakers will have the opportunity to learn from peers, colleagues and expert speakers on how to cultivate their direct relationship with the natural environment and explore intergenerational healing through the arts, music, workshops and rituals.  Special attention will be given to creating safe indoor andoutdoor spaces for rest, connection, and critical reflection throughout the Summit.

Nestled in the lush Central Visayas region of Siquijor, the Summit will leverage the island’s unique cultural heritage and natural landscapes. Once known as the mystical “Island of Fire”, Siquijor shares a rich history of traditional healing practices and environmental conservation. This is the ideal place to explore the indigenous ways of knowing and its overall impact on wellbeing.

Let us learn, discover, and connect around the Hearth together. We look forward to hosting you on this collective journey to wellbeing and social change in the Philippines!

      THE PROGRAMME

      THREE DAYS, FIVE ELEMENTS

Learn, discover, and connect around the Hearth

Inspired by the other regional Hearth Summits which have sparked regional movements for wellbeing around the world, Hearth Summit Philippines will be the seed for individual and collective action in ensuring the wellbeing of those on the frontlines of social change in the Philippines.

The Hearth Summit Philippines (Lunas Pilipinas) programme will centre on the five key natural elements: fire, air, water, earth, and ether. Throughout the three-day gathering, we will focus on each element and its relationship to traditional Philippine values, intergenerational healing, and ecological belonging. In addition, we will hold a series of pre-Summit events to engage the broader diaspora to offer accessible content and ongoing engagement across geographies.

      Adora Faye de Vera

Adora Faye is an artist, poet, and revolutionary. She was first arrested at the age of 22 for fighting against the Marcos Dictatorship and Martial Law where she was subject to numerous, gross human rights violations. Under the second Marcos presidency, Adora was again arrested and detained in the provincial jail of Iloilo in August of 2022 under false, multiple charges of murder. She was held for over a year before a court found no evidence or basis for her arrest or detainment and she was freed. During her wrongful incarceration, Adora wrote about the state of women in the jail, which highlighted the prison industrial complex making super profits from the traditional hablon weaving inmates are forced to do in order to be given basic needs such as water. Adora used her embroidery skills to record the stories of the individual women and global women’s rights everywhere.

      STORIES FROM THE SUMMIT

      Why Lunas Philipinas?

Lunas is the Tagalog word for “remedy” or “cure.” More than that, it is an antidote, medicine for what ails you in the broadest sense, answers to help you get through a hard time. Lunas is an exhale after a long day, comfort for weary souls, balm for broken hearts, a practice of hope, and invitation to come together as kapwa, in community.

The Summit, hosted on the remote island of Siquijor, is co-created by the Siquijor Healers Association and will invite changemakers to explore the unique traditions and culture of the island’s healer community. Once known as the mystical “Island of Fire”, Siquijor shares a rich history of traditional healing practices and environmental conservation. This will be an ideal place to explore Indigenous ways of knowing and its overall impact on wellbeing. To learn more about the Siquijor healers, the upcoming Summit, and a Philippine take on wellbeing, read Summit co-creator Macy Castañeda Lee’s feature in Tatler Asia.

A SPECIAL CALLING FOR THE FILIPINO DIASPORA

Hearth Summit Philippines will be dedicated to fostering wellbeing for the global Filipino community.

“With a legacy of 400 years of Spanish colonization and then being sold to the United States for 100 years, by the time the Philippines gained their full “freedom” in 1946, colonial mentality, identity, and relationships were deeply ingrained in our culture. Add to this enduring exploitation of the land and the people, corruption, and a 20+ year Marcos dictatorship, the result is a country whose biggest export are its people in the form of migrant laborers.

Overseas Filipino Workers are responsible for supporting a significant part of the GDP, sending over USD60 billion annually in remittances. While they are called “heroes”by the government, the cost is too great — there are generations of children being raised without their mothers or fathers. It will take an average of 12 years or more to reunite their families.

On the other side of oceans, American / European / Middle-Eastern-born Filipinos face issues of identify, racism, and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

What is incredible and enduring is the spirit of Filipinos all over the world to persist. They adapt. They survive. They bring the Philippines with them wherever they go-through food, values, language, and family ties. And, in almost 200 countries, Filipinos continue to think of the Philippines as “home.” The Balikbayan is not just a title, it’s a journey home.

The need for wellbeing is the journey to healing intergenerational trauma, finding our place through ecological belonging and defining our understanding of our culture through sikolohiyang Pilipino.”

      — The Lunas Pilipinas Team

Changemakers in Southeast Asia: this is your chance to join changemakers, innovators, and thought leaders who are shaping a hopeful future for individual, collective, and ecological wellbeing. With a focus on youth empowerment, sustainable businesses, indigenous wisdom, and climate resilience, this summit is where visionary ideas turn into bold actions.

Hearth Summit Malaysia will be packed with dynamic programs designed to inspire and engage. From mental health in schools, impactful entrepreneurship, to the intersection of art and sustainability, changemakers from all sectors will be inspired to nurture wellbeing in their work.

The summit’s four key pillars — Young People, Business & Economy, Art & Culture, and Planetary Health — will offer immersive workshops, thought-provoking panel discussions, and hands-on activities. Engage in nature walks, explore eco-art installations, and discover groundbreaking innovations through the ASEAN Impact Challenge, designed to launch as Malaysia assumes the role of ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025.

Don’t miss your chance to be part of this incredible journey toward a better, more sustainable future. Learn, discover, and connect around the Hearth

      YOUTH & WELLBEING

The Summit will be anchored in a hopeful vision for the future of wellbeing in Malaysia by focusing on the wellbeing of young people, notably schoolchildren. Sessions around mental health and happiness in schools, as well as advancements in education, science, and innovation — some even hosted by children themselves! — will guide changemakers of all ages to think about intergenerational wellbeing.

      PLANETARY WELLBEING

The final pillar, interwoven with the others, will explore climate action, resilience, circular economy, and sustainability. Experts, activists, and community leaders will lead discussions on pressing environmental issues, innovative solutions, and practical strategies for fostering sustainable lifestyles and resilient communities. Changemakers will also enjoy experiential activities to connect with nature, fostering a deep sense of ecological belonging and awareness.

      ARTS & CULTURE

The Summit will incorporate Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage and innovations in arts and sciences within conversations on social change. Celebrations of Indigenous wisdom will enrich lives and foster respect and wellbeing through ancestral practices and value. Meanwhile, explorations of the arts and sciences will promote innovation, discovery, and creativity. All will be rooted in an exploration of Ecological Belonging through a uniquely Malaysian lens.

      BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Hosted as Malaysia will assume the presidency of ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations), leading businesses, entrepreneurs, investors, and thought-leaders will join the Summit to collaborate at the critical intersection of business, economy, and wellbeing. The Summit will explore wellbeing at work through many angles: employee wellness and organizational wellbeing; sustainable business and economic models; and entrepreneurial innovations.

Driving Long-Term Impact With Legacy Projects Driving Long-Term Impact With Legacy Projects

Arts and Culture: The Summit will also launch a legacy project, Sa-Na. Se-Ni | Sains Naluri, Seni Insani, an inclusive ecosystem dedicated to discovering, nurturing, and showcasing new local ArtScience creations on a global scale.

Youth & Wellbeing: The Summit will also launch the legacy project, My Happy Schools, which will seek to enable children and teachers to address happiness at schools using UNESCO’s Happy Schools Framework, which uses the positive psychology approach to happiness at schools with a focus on achieving wellbeing (“happinessˮ) as a goal.

Planetary Wellbeing and Business & Economy: Finally, the Summit will launch the next ASEAN Impact Challenge, a regional platform designed to discover innovators from Southeast Asia who are accelearating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through cross-sector partnerships and disruptive innovations.

      A Historic Moment

As Malaysia prepares to take on the prestigious role of Chair of ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) in 2025, Hearth Summit Malaysia will serve as a powerful prelude to this leadership, positioning the nation as a beacon of wellbeing and sustainability in the region. The summit will not only address pressing issues such as climate resilience, youth empowerment, and sustainable business practices, but it will also unite regional leaders, innovators, and changemakers to drive forward Malaysia’s vision of a more inclusive and resilient ASEAN. By laying the groundwork for transformative initiatives and fostering cross-border collaborations, Hearth Summit will directly support Malaysia’s chairmanship, reinforcing its commitment to leading the ASEAN community toward a future defined by holistic wellbeing for people and the planet.

In response to COVID-19, The Wellbeing Project, in collaboration with Amplifier Art launched a campaign with top art curators and public-health advisors from around the world, looking for symbols that promote mental health, wellbeing and social change work in this new age.

“I did this as a small reminder to people that it´s necessary to take care of our health when leaving home and having contact with others, giving special importance to hygiene, but in addition we must eat well and keep good habits to strengthen our body, our internal defenses. This is not easy for everyone, many don´t have access to proper food, either for financial reasons or availability, but despite the difficulties we must try our best to take care of ourselves and stay healthy.”

In the current Covid-19 crisis thinking on the future just makes me experience much anxiety. As I currently see things, there’s no point to think about the future when a storm of uncertainty surrounds us and our lives are on hold. I think it’s time for us to stay mindful, concentrating on the present moment and tackle everyday problems in the calmest way possible. If our mind is overloaded, our capacity response will stay low which won’t allow us to progress. I suggest practicing yoga and meditation as a powerful tool to stay calm and coherent.

Capitalism tries to push the idea that we need to be productive. A lot of us feel like we need to constantly hustle and be on the grind to achieve our dreams. But giving yourself time to rest and take care of yourself is a gift that can empower you. It sounds counter-intuitive, but rest ultimately allows you to be in a stronger place to tackle whatever comes your way. But we are in a global pandemic right now. Firstly – around the literal idea of being able to breathe freely by wearing a mask, secondly – allowing the planet the space to breathe by doing your part and thirdly – addressing the anxiety that comes with the unknown elements of the crisis.”

      SPREAD LOVE

In response to COVID-19, The Wellbeing Project, in collaboration with Amplifier Art launched a campaign with top art curators and public-health advisors from around the world, looking for symbols that promote mental health, wellbeing and social change work in this new age.

“I created this artwork because I wanted to celebrate all of the acts of selflessness and kindness, both big and small, that we have seen during the pandemic. But I was also seeing so much hatred and blame. I wanted to remind people to withhold judgement, to remember that we are all in this together and that a little kindness goes a long way. Even wearing a mask and maintaining distance is an act of kindness and respect to those around us. I chose the rainbow and sunshine as a bright and positive backdrop to the message – the symbol of hope, of rays of sunlight which shine through in a dark storm. I hope this message can help people to stay positive, and that it encourages everyone to spread a little love in these difficult times.”

In response to COVID-19, The Wellbeing Project, in collaboration with Amplifier Art launched a campaign with top art curators and public-health advisors from around the world, looking for symbols that promote mental health, wellbeing and social change work in this new age.

“It’s time to manage the voice of the Media and take control of the voices inside our heads. The media content we’ve been consuming since Covid-19 has taken a toll on our thoughts and emotions. We feel the urge to stay up to date on the current happenings and tend to incline towards negativity. This artwork is inspired by vintage advertisements, portraying the importance of a mental cleanse. Visual media like advertisements, cinema etc, have always been part of our mental growth. I visualise the voice of media to be more positive and break stereotypes around mental illness.”

      DON’T PANIC, BE RESILIENT

In response to COVID-19, The Wellbeing Project, in collaboration with Amplifier Art launched a campaign with top art curators and public-health advisors from around the world, looking for symbols that promote mental health, wellbeing and social change work in this new age.

“This work riffs off the famous phrase of the Indian spiritual master Meher Baba, “Don’t worry; Be happy,” later converted into song by Bobby McFerrin in 1988. Its concise message of positivity has at times been misunderstood as careless or passive, but simplicity is powerful and mantras like these continue to be used because they encourage us during challenging times. While its difficult to be happy in the face of this crisis and the uncertainty it brings, together we can withstand the curve, flatten it, and recover- not through worry or panic, but through collaboration as a world community. With this work, I want to express a simple message for all of us: to resist fear-mongering messages and to focus on our innate human resilience.”

“The nearer a man comes to a calm mind, the closer he is to strength’ In my opinion, mental health is the most overlooked aspect of human nature. Seldom we give it the attention it deserves. No amount of wealth guarantees ones well being and current global scenario is a reflection of the same. At the moment, when the world is facing a, what seems to be an immortal, enemy, no amount of wealth or militia is enough to fight it. In these times, when people are forced to be at home, take a step back and reflect. As much effort is being put in maintaining and enhancing physical strength, try and focus on your inner peace as well. What makes you happy? A question, to which most of us have an answer to, but rarely do we act on it. We have always been too pre occupied with things and troubles, which now do not seem to matter as much. So let’s take a deep breathe, and focus on what is more important – YOU. Be the change you wish to see in the world. World peace, begins at Inner peace. Stay Positive. Stay Home. Stay Safe”

      NOTABLE RESEARCH FINDINGS

Only 2 studies out of 102 studies on teacher wellbeing conducted in the last 5 years were in low-income countries; this report offers findings from 2 additional low-income countries. People who study teacher wellbeing recommend improvements to the school atmosphere, but no studies of school-level or policy interventions were found.

      Engagement:

When on the cusp of burnout, some teachers said that getting more deeply engaged in their work, for example by leading the school-wide IT team or serving on a district-wide committee, prevented burnout.

      Successful students:

Teachers experienced wellbeing when they saw their students win awards or achieve their goals, and liked this as much or more than receiving awards themselves.

      Relationships affect each other:

Teachers, principals, students, parents, and policymakers’ behaviors and attitudes intertwine. Improving one may help them all. Teacher wellbeing across these actors was related to respect, praise, motivation, and hard work.
