Art and Spirituality. Imagining the Extraordinary in the BBVA Collection

Art and Spirituality. Imagining the Extraordinary is an exhibition organized by BBVA and curated by Alfonso de la Torre. It brings together a carefully selected group of works from the historical and contemporary holdings in the BBVA Collection in Spain.
Arranged in four different chapters, around forty classic and modern artworks are seamlessly displayed alongside one another, acknowledging the wealth and diversity of the BBVA Collection in a variety of media and techniques: painting, sculpture, photography and installation as well as videos on loan courtesy of other collections.
The show wishes to highlight the influence that spirituality, understood as a universal phenomenon, has exerted on art creation throughout time.
Leveraging a variety of different resources—like religion, light, energy, emptiness, sublimity, metaphors or symbols—artists from different times have pondered on the purpose of creation and have tried to materialize in their works that essential aspect of the human being, that inner and transcendental element that gives meaning to our lives. Through the encounter with the artwork and appealing to concepts that are hard to express through words, they attempt to conjure a supernatural experience, inviting the beholder to “imagine the extraordinary.”
In the courtyard of the palace, the visitors will also be able to enjoy the recording of the performance Ripple. Expansive Wave by the artist Mar Solis, performed on the occasion of the exhibition opening.
WALKTHROUGH
The Origin – The Centre
The starting point for this journey is the beginning, the origin, symbolized by the presence of centres in art images. With its mysterious concealed, thinking and energetic centre, Oteiza’s metaphysical box exemplifies the birth of the image of the invisible. This chapter includes works whose exploration of the origin is rendered through a variety of representations, like spirals, maelstroms, circles or shafts of light. Gardens and Deserts. The Garden of Earthly Delights versus the Desert and Spaces.
The second chapter includes works related to images of heaven and its symbolic equivalents (paradise, Eden or the garden) and also illustrations of the opposite, death and desolation (deserts and graveyards). The former are represented with works by David Teniers, Ouka Leele and Esteban Vicente, and the latter with pieces by Yves Tanguy or Lucio Muñoz.
Between Pain and Ecstasy. Miracles and Healing
The third chapter is “Between Pain and Ecstasy,” with a special section devoted to “Miracle and Healing”. Extraordinary manifestations of the supernatural like miracles, ecstasy and apparitions are reflected in works by Bill Viola or Luis Vélez. Next to them are pieces that comment on a more everyday and closer connection with divinity, like the small private altarpiece attributed to Juan de Soreda or the sculpture by Mar Solís that seeks to challenge the very boundaries of matter.
The fourth and final chapter revolves around the notion of the fleetingness of life, most poignantly captured in the vanitas, illustrated here in several exceptional works like an anonymous painting of Saint Jerome, or vanitas by Joaquín Sorolla and Marina Abramović, arranged in dialogue with works by Miquel Barceló and Manuel Franquelo, and offset by the ghostly landscapes by Karl Eugen Körner and Juan Carlos Savater.
In the words of the curator, the exhibition “threads together images posed as apparitions, as transpicuous, passionate presences which, although anchored in the history of art, seem to have risen anew in this new moment of time, as if they were giving us a chance to be eye-witnesses to the unfolding of an event.”
The four chapters offer a contemporary and educational reading of “Art and Spirituality” grounded in the holdings of the BBVA Collection, inviting us to visit it and embark on a journey through a selection of extraordinary images.

The mysticism of experience is further explored in Music and Spirituality. Listening to the Extraordinary, a playlist selected by Joan Gómez Alemany accessible to the public by scanning a QR code: an eclectic compilation that transports us to different ways of understanding spirituality around the world.

Arte y espiritualidad. Imaginar lo extraordinario es una exposición organizada por BBVA y comisariada por Alfonso de la Torre que recoge una cuidada selección de los fondos históricos y contemporáneos de la Colección BBVA en España.
Alrededor de cuarenta piezas distribuidas en cuatro secciones, proponen un encuentro entre la colección de arte antiguo y la de los siglos XX y XXI, reflejando la riqueza y variedad de la Colección BBVA en diversos soportes y técnicas: pintura, escultura, fotografía e instalación; también alguna obra de videoarte, prestada por cortesía de otras colecciones.
La muestra pretende poner de manifiesto la importancia que la espiritualidad, entendida como un fenómeno universal, ha ejercido en la creación artística a lo largo del tiempo.
Sirviéndose de muy diversos recursos, como la religión, la luz, la energía, el vacío, el silencio, lo sublime, la metáfora o el símbolo, artistas de distintas épocas han reflexionado acerca de los propósitos de la creación y han tratado de plasmar en su trabajo ese aspecto esencial del ser humano, esa parte interior y trascendental que da sentido a nuestras vidas. Son intentos de evocar −a través del encuentro con la obra de arte y apelando a conceptos difícilmente expresables mediante la palabra− la experiencia de lo sobrenatural, que invita al espectador a “imaginar lo extraordinario”.
En el patio del palacio, los visitantes tendrán la oportunidad de disfrutar de la grabación de la performance Ripple. Onda Expansiva de la artista Mar Solís, realizada para la inauguración de la exhibición.
RECORRIDO
El origen – El centro
El punto de partida de este viaje es el principio, el origen, simbolizado por la presencia de centros en las imágenes de arte. Con su misterioso centro oculto, pensante y energético, la caja metafísica de Oteiza ejemplifica el nacimiento de la imagen de lo invisible. Este capítulo incluye trabajos cuya explicación del origen se realiza a través de una variedad de representaciones, como espirales, vorágines, círculos y haces de luz.
Jardines y Desiertos. El Jardín de las Delicias versus el desierto y los espacios.
La segunda sección acoge creaciones relativas a imágenes del cielo y sus equivalentes simbólicos −paraísos, jardines o edenes−, y también las que ilustran lo contrario, la muerte y la desolación –desiertos y camposantos−. Temáticas representadas con obras de David Teniers, Ouka Leele, Yves Tanguy o César Manrique.
Entre el dolor y el éxtasis. Milagro y sanación.
El tercer capítulo es “Entre el dolor y el éxtasis”, con una sección especial dedicada a “Milagro y sanación”. Manifestaciones extraordinarias de lo sobrenatural como lo milagros, éxtasis y apariciones reflejadas en obras de Bill Viola o Luis Vélez. Junto a ellas, piezas que comentan una conexión más cotidiana y cercana con la divinidad, como el pequeño retablo privado atribuido a Juan de Soreda o la escultura de Mar Solís que busca desafiar los propios límites de la materia.
El cuarto y final capítulo gira en torno la noción de la fugacidad de la vida, plasmada de forma más conmovedora en las vanitas, ilustrada en varias obras excepcionales como un cuadro anónimo de San Jerónimo, o vanitas de Joaquín Sorolla y Marina Abramović, dispuestas en diálogo con obras de Miquel Barceló y Manuel Franquelo, y compensadas por los paisajes fantasmales de Karl Eugen Körner y Juan Carlos Savater.
En palabras del comisario, la exposición “enhebra imágenes planteadas como apariciones, como presencias transpicuas y apasionadas que, aunque ancladas en la historia del arte, parecen haber resurgido en este nuevo momento del tiempo, como si nos dieran la oportunidad de ser testigos presenciales del desarrollo de un acontecimiento.”
Los cuatro capítulos ofrecen una lectura contemporánea y pedagógica de “Arte y Espiritualidad” a partir de los fondos de la Colección BBVA, invitándonos a visitarla y a emprender un viaje a través de una selección de imágenes extraordinarias.
Música y espiritualidad. Oír lo extraordinario
La misticidad de la experiencia se ve reforzada por una selección musical realizada por Joan Gómez Alemany, titulada ‘Música y espiritualidad. Oír lo extraordinario’. Una ecléctica recopilación que nos transporta a diversas formas de entender la espiritualidad alrededor del mundo y a la que el público podrá acceder a través de un código QR.
