WISE GATHERING 2022

The Wellbeing, Innovation, and Social Change in Education (WISE) Gathering which held in Bilbao from June 5-8, 2022 opened a space for connection, learning, and growth for our community. The gathering focused on building models, programs, and partnerships that weave theories and practices of wellbeing into higher education programs and curricula.

SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF THE GATHERING

The activities focused on connecting with our global community, partnership building, and strategic conversations around collaboration as network members reinforce the commitment to catalyzing a culture of inner wellbeing within the social change education field.

🌱 Growth of the WISE Network Community from 11 to 73 member institutions with almost 50% of member institutions in attendance for the in-person gathering

💙 Created a connected learning community and developed a framework for collaboration and resource sharing

BROAD GOALS OF THE GATHERING

Connection – Collaboration

  • Foster community building amongst members from around the world to deepen relationships and expand our networks
  • Gain new energy and support for moving our ideas forward

Strategy – Envisioning

  • Start conversations and build the steps to realize our shared goals
  • Explore identified areas of interest as a collective and develop an implementation strategy for the next year
  • Safeguard our mission through alignment of leadership & governance

Wellbeing Literacy

  • Peer-to-peer learning of wellbeing models and programs for implementing inner wellbeing curriculums
  • Deep dive sessions on models for wellbeing curriculum development and implementation

THE LOCATION: BILBAO, SPAIN

The city of Bilbao has a rich history of healing through Arts and culture and is one of the greatest treasures in the Basque country. The city, located 16km from the Bay of Biscay, is its beating heart and its largest city.

Join hosts from Stanford University, University of Virginia, Mondragon, and The Wellbeing Project for a 4-day launching of our network which aims to catalyze a culture of inner wellbeing in the social change education world.

Aneel Chima, PhD
Co-founder and co-covener, The WISE Network. Aneel is a director of the Division of Health and Human Performance at Stanford University. His work applies insights from the emerging science and art wellbeing alongside the tools of design thinking and systems change to scale positive transformation.

Silvana Cisneros
Networks Lead at The Wellbeing Project. Silvana has over a decade of experience in network design and creation with a focus on Latin America. Silvana is passionate about wellbeing and the possibility of building healthier societies through individual and collective healing, compassion and kindness.

David Germano
Professor of Tibetan and Buddhist Studies at the University of Virginia. David is on the board of the International Association of Tibetan Studies. In 2000, he founded the Tibetan and Himalayan Library.

Isabel WISE Gathering

Isabel Prieto Rivero
Team coach (Professor) at Mondragon Team Academy-Mondragon University. Isabel has a background in Human Resources in multinational environments. Her work is focused on Learning and Development, Career Coaching, and Talent Management.

Ziortza Olano Astigarraga
Ziortza is the coordinator of the BILBAO BERRIKUNTZA FAKTORIA and team coach (professor) at Mondragon Team Academy-Mondragon University. Her work is focused on social change entities and has led projects related to training (traditional and ICTs), social innovation (first sector, citizen participation, entrepreneurship, cooperation), and people development.

This is a unique opportunity to create strong networks that can bring solutions and new perspectives for our future. There is no fee for attendance, but members are asked to cover their travel and lodging (limited scholarships are available, please inquire to learn more).

We understand that there may be unpredictability and other challenges, causing travel to not be accessible for everyone. For those members not able to join, we will have an online space after the gathering to share results and to include your voices in the conversations.

THE MISSION

To enable and support the inner wellbeing of teachers and caregivers to build a future of education where wellbeing is fundamentally integrated and prioritized.

 THE APPROACH

The Caregivers and Teachers Wellbeing Group convenes key global and regional education and caregiving institutions to learn, guide and give feedback on a soon to be published research study featuring cases from Cambodia, Kenya, and Qatar which will support global awareness raising on the need and importance to advocate for caregiver and teacher wellbeing.

Research Study

A research study will be published at the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) in December 2021. The main purpose of this study is to better understand teacher wellbeing in a multi-country context (Qatar, Kenya, and Cambodia) and to identify the individual and contextual factors that may transform and sustain teacher wellbeing.

Storytelling campaign

A storytelling campaign will accompany the research study in December 2021.

Shifting to action

A second phase will focus on shifting from research to action.
