This article defines and examines the construct of self-compassion. The author explores self-compassion in relation to other psychological approaches, from different individual and group perspectives and compares it with self-esteem, which maintaining high levels of can have negative consequences. The three main components of self compassion; self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness are discussed in detail and recognised as important factors in creating a kinder, less isolated and more emotionally functional society.
