Burnout: Thirty-five years of research and practice. Career Development International, 14 (3), 204-220. Schaufeli, W. B., Leiter, M. P., & Maslach, C. (2009).

This paper provides an overview of the concept of burnout within global, economic, cultural and social contexts. It examines the definitions and diagnoses of burnout from its emergence in the 1970’s up to its present meaning which is more influenced by positive psychology and defined by the erosion of engagement, as opposed to negative determining factors. The authors acknowledge burnout is a global phenomenon but the exact meaning of the concept varies with its geographical location, context and the intentions of those using it.
